Transportation
Travel to and from Lisbon
Lisboa is
easy to get to. It is a short flight away from most European cities, and
is just as easily accessible by road, railway or sea.
By air
Lisboa International Airport, 7 km from the city centre, has daily flights to and from the major cities in Europe and the world and is being serviced by all major international airlines.
By rail
Scores of
national and international trains arrive in Lisboa every day. In addition
to Santa Apolónia terminal station, the city now has the new Gare do
Oriente, which opened in 1998 adjacent to the Parque das Nações. Both
stations have direct bus or underground connections to the city centre.
By road
Arriving
in Lisboa by road is a pleasant experience, as the visitor can enjoy the
beautiful countryside along the way. The city has good road accesses and
the most frequently used routes are: the A1 motorway. the 25th April
Bridge, the new Vasco da Gama Bridge, and the CREL, the outer ring-road
for the Lisboa region.
Travelling within Lisbon
Public
transportation
Lisbon's
variety of transportation contributes to its unique charm. Old trams and
turn-of-the-century elevators explore the oldest quarters, and the modern
subway lines are decorated with contemporary art. Yet, central Lisbon is
compact enough to explore on foot, and most sights in Baixa, Bairro Alto,
and Alfama are within walking distance.
Metro
Lisbon's metro
(subway or underground) is modern, clean, and efficient. It runs from
6:30 am to 1:00 am, and many of its stations are decorated with
contemporary art, making it a tourist attraction in itself.
Tram
Riding tram 28 just for the
experience is a must in Lisbon. Tram 15 is also the best way to reach
Belem from downtown and the Congress Centre.
Taxi
To reach attractions
outside the center or to get around late at night (after 1AM when the
metro closes), take a taxi. It should not cost more than € 10 to go
between anywhere within the city and the center (Baixa).
Bus and
Aerobus
CarrisTur's "Aerobus" &
"AeroShuttle" services travel between Lisbon city centre and the airport.
They run between 7:45 am and 8:45 pm and the ticket is purchased on
board.
The
local Carris bus service also provides commuter buses between the airport
and downtown (numbers 44, 45 and 83 cost € 1,30) and there are some
destinations within the city that are best reached by bus.
